ALM, publisher of The National Law Journal, The American Lawyer and The New York Law Journal, is looking to hire an innovative and driven editor to oversee its VerdictSearch newsletters and database and help grow them. This is a high-profile assignment for an editor who wants to dive deep into the courts and understand and cover the trends driving the most significant litigation and verdicts in the country. We are looking for an individual with strong editing and leadership skills, as well as someone who is proficient at time management. You'll be leading a team of editors and reporters covering the most important trial courts across the country, editing and sending out newsletters, looking for trends and writing about them, and collaborating across our Global Newsroom. Good communication, time-management skills, curiosity and enthusiasm are essential. ABOUT THE TEAM: As part of ALM's global newsroom, the Verdict Search team is focused on covering the verdicts, settlements and trends in the most important trial courts in the country. We put a premium on reporting on the largest verdicts handed down nationally, as well as spotting trends, problems and anomalies that arise in trials. We aim to be the go-to source for litigators. Responsibilities:

  • Oversee a staff of editors, assignment editors and reporters
  • Manage day-to-day affairs of department, including hiring, expenses and data/case acquisitions
  • Edit and assemble a weekly publication, a monthly publication and others as needed
  • Research and write weekly data-analysis article
  • Research and write weekly sector profile
  • Compile annual National Law Journal Top 100 rankings (yearlong project)
  • Manage delivery of editorial to sales for six to eight special supplements a year
  • Drive to gather and report more verdicts
  • Drive innovation and change to the brand as well as within the team
  • Use the VerdictSearch database to research and write weekly data-analysis article focusing on a particular trend or sector in civil litigation
  • Use the VerdictSearch database to research and write a weekly sector profile, such as largest verdicts in a particular area of practice or largest settlements paid by an insurer Qualifications:
    • Must be able to write clearly, concisely, engagingly and authoritatively-and on a deadline.
    • Must be able to establish and nurture relationships with lawyers, judges and court officials.
    • Must thrive in a fast-paced environment and have the ability to juggle a stream of duties, including editing newsletters, on tight deadlines.
    • Must be capable of analyzing data and being able to write trend reports/stories based on it.
    • Must have a positive, can-do attitude.
    • Must have good communication and time management skills and be a team player good at collaboration.
    • Must be good at hiring and managing talent.
    • Must be good with overseeing and streamlining processes.
    • Ideally, 3-5 years' experience in a daily news environment and some experience with legal or business journalism is preferred. Why you should join ALM...
