Summary of Position
The Controls Design Engineer is critical to the successful
integration of Direct Digital Controls (DDC) into a mechanical HVAC
design. Understanding of HVAC equipment operation at both the
individual level and in concert with other equipment at the whole
building level will be an integral part of this position.
To provide suitable control documents, including schematic
drawings, point lists, sequences of operation, and specification
sections, the Controls Design Engineer will be capable of
implementing entire DDC control systems, from initial hardware
design to final system tuning. They will provide field assistance
to support DDC controls system project delivery as required, which
may include communicating design intent and design details,
answering technical questions, and performing any duties relating
to the DDC control system project, seeing it to completion. Regular
collaboration is necessary within controls and commissioning
Prepare schematic drawings, point lists, sequences of operation,
and specification sections within the control documents portion of
the overall mechanical design.
Stay current on control strategies and code changes. Participate in
training, internal and external. Obtain and maintain technical
certifications as needed.
Participate in construction administration efforts alongside other
groups within the company.
Participate in control submittal reviews, project planning
meetings, and other support as required.
Execute on quality Project Management with the aid of company
provided tools, training, and metrics.
Assist DDC controls system project delivery with field support.
Communicate design intent and details, answer technical questions,
and participate in any portion of the DDC control system project
construction as required, seeing it to completion.
Create hardware design and installation drawings. Include equipment
selection used to provide bill of materials.
Master the use of Niagara, Tridium, PX graphic screen development,
meta-data tagging, wire sheet programming, analytics, and hierarchy
Provide control support (fine-tuning and troubleshooting of DDC
control systems) as necessary to deliver high quality DDC control
Perform site visits in order to collect equipment information and
assess system operations.
Aid in performance of Test & Balance services.
Analyze performance of system operations and
Analyze system operational performance and suggest methods to
improve operations and energy efficiency.
Assist in utility analysis.
A Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is
ideal. However, significant experience with the design of building
automation systems and frequent interaction with contractors could
be substituted for a formal Engineering degree.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Basic understanding of HVAC systems and control strategies
Basic understanding of DDC control systems
Ability to quickly learn control systems software applications
