experience***Job SummaryProtection & Controls
EngineeringResponsible for the design of protection and control
relaying applications for substations (new and existing) with a
specific focus on Protection Settings and SCADA Settings. Design
projects range from routine equipment modifications and
installations to the complete design of new transmission
facilities. - This work requires an understanding of power systems,
transformers, protective relaying, and electrical engineering
principles. Involved in the development and review of designs for
high voltage substations at voltages of 15kV, 44kV, 69kV, 100kV,
130kV, 230kV and 345kV. Additionally, expected to develop or
possess expertise in protective relay settings calculations and
analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC,
etc.). Must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages
of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design
support to field personnel during project implementation; develop
and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software
for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a
team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best
quality product possible. -Substation EngineeringThe Substation
Engineering department is responsible for designing the physical
layout for new substations, expansions to existing substations,
upgrades, and failing equipment replacements that require
engineering efforts to retrofit with the latest equipment. -
Substation Engineering is responsible for site grading, foundation
design, structural design and analysis, and electrical analysis for
grounding and lightning protection. - It is a diverse group of
civil engineers, electrical engineers, and designer/drafters that
all work together to contribute to our projects' success.Job
ResponsibilitiesProtection & Controls Engineering
- Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to
ensure timely release of engineering designs.
- Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques to complete an
engineering design, including current design specifications,
pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software,
and other reference sources.
- Produces engineering release packages consisting of pertinent
drawings and bills of material.
- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the
identification, analysis, and resolution of problems of increasing
scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of
typical responsibility.
- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through
effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and
monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations
or results of the work group and may have some impact on major
projects or department results.
- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports,
correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches related
to defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and
complexity.
- Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine
engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to
independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to
design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on
existing systems.
- Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and
procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies
necessary to handle assignments of increasing complexity.
- Develops positive working relationships to effectively

- Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the
identification, analysis and resolution of well-defined problems in
area of expertise.
- Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of

activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations
and makes decision that may affect the work of the team.

- 2 years minimum required related experiencePreferred
QualificationsProtection and Controls Engineer (Relay Settings)
- Familiarity with electromechanical, solid-state, and
microprocessor-based relaying.
- Familiarity with relay protection schemes and relay logic.
- Experience with relay settings calculations for protective
relays from Protection & Control designs specifically settings for
line, autobank transformers, transformers, bus, capacitor bank for
both transmission & distribution class equipment
- Interpret and develop relay logic used with
microprocessor-based relays
- Interpretation of relay documents and Protection & Control
design drawings
- Interpretation and compliance with all applicable NERC
(PRC-006, PRC-012, PRC-023, PRC-025, PRC-027, CIP-002, and CIP-10)
and FRCC regulations
- Analysis and reporting of fault analysis and relay actions
- Experience with power system modeling and relay coordination
studies using Aspen One-Liner software
- Familiarity with Aspen Relay Database, SEL-5010, SEL-5030
AcSELerator, EnerVista UR, CymTCC software.
- Familiarity with protection system components, such as relays,
carrier sets, RTU, instrument transformers, and DC systems.
- Basic understanding of serial and networking
communications
- Familiarity with PTC Mathcad software
- Familiarity with AutoCAD softwareProtection and Controls
Engineer (SCADA)
- Experience with multiple SCADA hardware platforms
- Experience developing SCADA Point Assignment Sheets (PAS) or
Point Data Sheets (PDS)
- Experience with developing SCADA configuration files on
multiple hardware platforms
- Development of baselines and I/O summaries for existing and new
substations
- Familiarity with SEL RTACs and associated substation automation
products
- Experience with RTU configurations with serial protocols
- Basic understanding of communication protocols: - DNP 3.0, SEL,
ASCII, MODBUS
- Basic understanding of telecom networking
- Basic understanding of relay settings
- Understanding of NERC CIP requirements as well as ports and
services of devices and configurations

Conditions
- Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite
locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees
should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke

- Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an
ABET accredited program.
- A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of
