DEPARTMENT: Interventional Suite
REPORTS TO: Chief Nursing Officer, (Operations reports to Manager of Interventional Suite)

SUMMARY
An Interventional Suite (IS) Registered Nurse is a highly competent member of the professional health care team, who, through previous clinical experience and education, has shown excellent clinical judgement and is able to perform at a high level of autonomy. The (IS) Registered Nurse uses the nursing process in the care of patients with complex cardiovascular diseases, assessing the patient's status and collaborating with physicians to maintain a safe level of procedural sedation, monitoring the patients hemodynamics and attending to the needs of the patient.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE /QUALIFICATIONS

Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing program. Licensed by the State of Ohio as a Registered Nurse. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Basic Life Support (BLS) certifications required (within 6 months of hire.) Minimum Two years of clinical experience required (preferred ICU or ED).
SKILLS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensures emergency equipment is checked daily prior to the start of any patient care.
  • Ensures departmental supplies and stock levels are adequate for daily operations.
  • Identification of patient consent, pertinent medical history, lab values and procedure indications. Ensures HIPPA compliance
  • Performs professional nursing, technical and administrative duties as they relate to the cardiac services department.
  • Perform circulate, scrub and hemodynamic monitoring duties with diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures, interventional radiology procedures, and holding area procedures which include but are not limited to:
  • Assists with the setup of all equipment for procedures including but not limited to:
    • Cardiac diagnostic and interventional cases
      • Left heart catheterization
      • Right heart catheterization
      • Thrombectomy
      • PCI
      • Vascular diagnostic and interventional cases
        • Aortogram with runoff
        • Venogram
        • Fistulogram
        • Dialysis catheter placement/exchange/removals
        • Port placements
        • Interventional Radiology Cases
          • Biopsies
          • Paracentesis/Thoracentesis
          • Nephrostomy tubes
          • Pain management
          • Uses clinical knowledge, technical skills and professional judgment in accordance with professional and departmental standards and protocols.
          • Under the direction of the physician, administers procedural sedation to patient to maintain safe level of anesthesia, preventing deep sedation that would require reversal or rescue.
          • Provides care and education prior to procedure, monitoring and care intra procedure and providing post procedure care and instruction to patients.
          • Ability to establish and maintain hemostasis at the arterial access site post procedure and monitor for and respond to bleeding complications quickly and appropriately.

            PHYSICAL DEMANDS

            The position requires a considerable amount of physical work including lifting up to 50 pounds; any work load exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance. Color vision for perceiving changes in patients' skin color and colors of medicines and solutions, hearing to distinguish differences in heartbeat and breathing of patients, and motor coordination and manual dexterity to coordinate hands, eyes, and fingers. The individual will be required to wear a lead apron and thyroid shield to prevent radiation exposure as well as personal protective equipment including a mask, cap and eye protection during procedures to prevent accidental exposure to blood splatter.

            WORK ENVIRONMENT

            The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in a temperature controlled environment with varying exposure to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position may have exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents. The individual will be exposed to radiation during therapeutic and interventional procedures but will be provided with protective lead shielding. There may be incidental blood splatter for which personal protective equipment will be provided.
