General Description:

Residential Behavior Support Specialists (BSS) play a vital role in the success of each child. The Behavior Support Specialist is responsible for the daily direct care and supervision of children in our residential treatment facility. The clients in our residential treatment facility are suffering from childhood trauma with resulting behavioral health issues. Each client's trauma history and response can present with behaviors such as running away, self-injury, suicidal attempts, fighting, biting and hurting others both physically and emotionally, and using profanities. Behavior Support Specialists should respond therapeutically to each of these situations and all situations while working with clients in our care.

Behavior Support Specialists are required to be professional, flexible, compassionate, and composed in moderate to high stress situations. The Residential Behavior Support Specialist ensures children's basic life, educational and emotional needs are provided. Behavior Support Specialists strive to provide consistency, structure, and love for the clients in our care.

Essential Functions:

Direct Care

Provide direct care supervision and interactions of children during all aspects of the daily routine. The daily routine includes:

Monitoring school programs and helping with school work as needed

Participating and supporting Mental Health Day Treatment Coordinators in daily therapeutic groups sessions.

Providing meals as directed and creating a family atmosphere for meal time

Planning and implementing activities during free time (game night, movie night, arts and crafts night, etc.)

Enforcing and following the schedule and daily routine

Requiring and assisting clients with hygiene routines

Providing supervision for events off the unit

Implement the program's daily schedule.

Adhere to the structure, rules, and policies of the program

Assist youth with understanding rules, routines, and expectations in all areas of programming.

Holding youth accountable for adhering to and following rules of the program for all clients.

Provide active coaching for personal care needs including health, hygiene, nutrition, and life skills.

Participate in group and/or educational activities through active supervision, engagement, and involving oneself in the activities.

Orient new youth to the program.

Assist with program activities and special events, as assigned.

Ensure program areas are clean and organized-Both shifts are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and organization of all working areas.

Ensure program areas are safe, following program rules and policies.

Teach, demonstrate and model appropriate behavioral management, problem solving, and coping techniques to youth.

Advocate for youth, ensuring all basic needs are met, and assist youth with communicating those needs appropriately.

Provide transportation for youth as needed, ensuring compliance with all safety/car seat laws and regulations.

Dispense all medications as directed per prescription and document per agency policy.

Night shift: Must be awake at all times and conduct 15-minute room checks.

Trauma Informed

Be alert and respond therapeutically to aggressive behavior (Hitting, Biting, Kicking, Fighting) exhibited by residents using Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI). (TCI will be included in your first week of training.)

Complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) training and attend all refreshers.

Monitor and manage children in crisis situations by providing for safety and emotional needs using TCI.

Use de-escalation techniques daily (Taught in TCI and refresher courses).

Provide behavioral interventions within a safe, caring, and structured environment.

Utilize active listening with youth- paying attention to voice tone, body language, and nonverbal cues.

Utilize de-escalation techniques and utilize physical interventions only when safety of self or others is compromised. Techniques must be in accordance with SJO policy.

Ensure interactions and activities are therapeutic and advance the goals set forth in the treatment plan/IEP.

Acknowledge trauma that youth and families have overcome. Interact with youth and families in a trauma-responsive and trauma-informed manner.

Documentation

Document incident reports (CIR) accurately and timely as required by policy.

Complete daily summaries of client's activities and actions thoroughly and accurately.

Complete documentation accurately and submit within required timeframes.

Document youth progress through daily use of behavior support systems (logs, plans, etc.)

Working with Others

Cooperate with other staff members in achieving goals and treatment philosophies of the Residential Program.

Participate fully and positively as a member of the treatment team while following directions of management staff.

Maintain professionalism when acting as agency liaison during interactions with residents' families, parents and caregivers.

Utilize active listening with co-workers, paying attention to voice tone, body language, and nonverbal cues.

Communicate with co-workers about milieu/classroom issues throughout the shift and at the end of shift/shift change.

Contribute to transition planning and reintegration of youth into a less restrictive setting.

Maintain and model appropriate interpersonal relationships with co-workers, particularly in the presence of youth and family.

Ensure interactions are constructive and serve to advance the quality of care, the mission of the agency, and the agency's standing in the community

Daily Requirements

Adhere to each youth's right to confidentiality.

Deliver culturally competent services to youth

Attend all team meetings, staff meetings, in-service training and other meetings as assigned.

Be prepared for and attend supervision

Be an active member of this program this includes sharing ideas, being open to new ideas, introducing and/or implement new ideas for improving the quality of care.

Ensure supervisory staff are notified of major and critical incidents immediately. Complete incident and/or restraint documentation prior to the end of the shift.

Assist newly hired staff members in learning proper procedures, routines and agency policies.

Arrive on time for scheduled shifts.

Stay in assigned work area. Request permission from supervisory staff to leave assigned work area.

Follow dress code for program.

Additional

Work mandatory overtime shifts, as assigned, to ensure adequate staffing coverage.

Assist with holiday coverage, as assigned.

Provide coverage in other programs as directed by supervisor or program policy.

Must be able to perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation.

Other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Treatment, Unit Coordinator, and Unit Supervisor.

Maintain therapeutic and healthy boundaries as defined by the agency and program (Example: no horseplay).

Agency Expectations:

Maintain compliance and adheres to all SJO policies and practices, meeting critical expectations as defined.

Attends and utilizes supervision, carrying out all directives.

Reviews problems and concerns with supervisor to ensure effective and efficient completion of essential responsibilities.

Participates in all initial and on-going trainings as required by supervisor, SJO and regulatory policies.

Completes required documentation and responds to request from other departments accurately and by the required deadline.

Check SJO email at least once per day during assigned shifts. Staying up to date on emails is an expected job duty for all SJO employees.

Have a high school diploma or GED. Preference will be given to those with a Bachelor's Degree.

Be 21 years of age, have a valid driver's license, and proof of current automobile insurance.

Good driving record with no more than 5 points and able to pass background check.
