As a Co-op, you will apply highly developed specialist knowledge
and skills in performing complicated physical and/or chemical
analyses on calcium carbonate or products containing calcium
carbonate according to established and experimental laboratory
methods. Use advanced analytical and area specific instrumentation
as well as industry specific processing methods. Responsible for
logging in samples, entering data, and reporting data.
Ideal candidates will focus on the following project.
- Waste Water Treatment:
- Wastewater treatment is a foundational element to environmental
conservation and resource management. Effective treatment of
wastewaters typically includes a combination of mechanical,
chemical and biological treatment components. One of the most
influential control variables in wastewater treatment is pH as it
affects nearly every chemical and biological function. Many
wastewater operations rely on chemical additives for pH management
to ensure stable and efficient treatment.
- Increased concerns over the health and safety profiles of
chemicals used in treatment plants are driving the market away from
hazardous materials traditionally used for pH and alkalinity
control. Calcium carbonate slurries have the potential to serve as
a safer, more effective alternative for pH and alkalinity control
in many wastewater treatment processes. Numerous characteristics of
pH control agents are evaluated in the assessment of their
suitability for a wastewater application, but one key
characteristic is reaction kinetics. The reaction kinetics of the
material under certain aqueous conditions provide critical
information to understanding how it will perform in a full-scale
- The purpose of this project is to better understand the
reaction kinetics of calcium carbonate slurries in various aqueous
environments and how the kinetics compare to other alkaline mineral
slurries. The results obtained from this project are expected to
aid in understanding the fitness and limitations of calcium
carbonate slurries in wastewater treatment applications and better
predict their performance in a myriad of wastewater conditions.
- Develop a fundamental understanding of key wastewater treatment
processes and how pH and alkalinity control plays a role in
- Work with the Omya Technology Center Cincinnati and Omya
Environmental Solutions teams to design and conduct experiments
that allow for the accurate and repeatable assessment of reaction
kinetics for the mineral slurries in question under a variety of
- Collect the gathered data and observations and report the
findings to the Omya Environmental Solutions team.
- Laboratory Duties Perform advanced and non-routine product
analysis using a variety of analytical techniques (e. g. particle
size analysis, rheometers, spectroscopy, etc).
- Participate in designing experiments / tests.
- Estimate the resources and time required to conduct an
experiment / test and monitor performance to ensure these targets
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited college or university,
pursuing a degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Polymer
Science or Material Science.
Able to work on multiple projects under deadlines and be prepared
to demonstrate initiative and problem-solving abilities,
communicate and work effectively with other team members. Ability
