POSITION TITLE: Tooling Design/Model Shop/Tool Room Supervisor

REPORTING TO: DOO

LOCATION: Benton Harbor, MI

Scope of Role: Leads in-house machining and fabrication that supports Sustaining Engineering and New Product Development projects, (NPD). Creates new prototype parts, fixtures, test samples and concepts from that directly support Engineering and product design. Maintains and improves current production fixturing, assists in selection of machine tools. Must have demonstrated proficiency in CAD software for designing, development of prototypes, assemblies, and drawings. Procures materials and tooling required. Supervises Toolmakers in Model Shop and Tool Room, maintains department budget and goals for future state.

Demonstrated commitment to continuous quality improvement. Has the ability to work well in a team environment and thinks independently. Shows initiative, anticipates and prevents problems, has mechanical aptitude, and mental/physical/visual acuity. Decision making, analytics, supervisory skills and interpersonal skills are all necessary. The supervisor needs to be organized and has excellent communication skills. This person will interact with personnel at all levels at Gast.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Manages Tool Room and Model Shop Employees - creates development plans, maintains time keeping, and apprenticeship tracking. Supports employees in training plans.

Oversees the flow of work through the Model Shop and Toolroom including both in-house fabrication support as well as external resources.

Ensures that the schedule prioritization is communicated to VSM's and Engineers. Creates metrics on effectiveness of Model Shop and Tool Room

Owns all design / engineering responsibilities for tooling and fixturing for production assembly and machining centers. Leads in-house designs for machining and fabrication that may support both production and product development projects. Must have demonstrated proficiency in CAD software, (SolidWorks).

Maintaining department budget and goals for future state. Creates Continuous Improvement plans to develop Gast tooling and fixturing methods.

Attends NPD design review meetings to give insight and advice from a Model Shop perspective as well as production perspective.

Leads and mentors other engineers, designers, apprentices in good design practices. Able to engage others at all levels to achieve the best results on larger projects.

• Model Shop and Toolroom requests are being met in a timely manner
• Career development plans in place and acted on for tool room and model shop
• Ensures Engineering & Design needs being met: new tooling, fixturing, gaging, assemblies
• Proven growth: capabilities, learning, processes improvement, design concepts, project teams
• Continuous improvement of Gast tooling and fixturing capabilities.
  
  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS OR EQUIVALENCIES:
  
  • Bachelor's degree in manufacturing, business, engineering discipline, technical degree and / or Journeyman Toolmaker certification preferred
  • Has a vision for the future state including new in-house processes, can evaluate external vendor technical capabilities, and is active in learning about new machine tool technologies
  • Expert in CAD design software, (SolidWorks), design and solid model support
  • Overall working knowledge in machine tool technology, CAD software and design engineering background
  • Works well in a team environment as well as independently to solve problems

    • Proactive possess a strong sense of ownership and drive to success utilizing available resources Must be comfortable working under pressure with solid problem-solving methodology
    • Ability to motivate and drive others to deliver results
    • Well organized must have ability to address tactical issues in the short-term while maintaining long-term project plan
    • Excellent communication/presentation skills (written and verbal)

      • Ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment
